STATE LEAGUE
ROUND 6
13 JANUARY 2002
The Box Hill Athletic Club Men's State League team
was beaten by 5 points in round 6 of State League competition at Geelong
yesterday.
With no athletes competing for Box Hill in the
walk, hammer, discus, shot put, triple jump, high jump, javelin or 110m
hurdles the team did well to finish second only just behind Glenhuntly,
however it was a competition we could easily have won with even one more
athlete.
It was great to see a return to competition by Tim
Williams who won his heat of the 100m in 10.99s, with Marty Duke in third
place. James Fildes finished third in the second heat, just behind two Western
Suburbs runners.
Marcus Tierney led the 1500 for 3 laps in hot,
windy conditions but was overtaken by the pack in the last lap with Simon
McNamara finishing 5th in 4:01, Tim Heron 6th in 4:02 and Marcus 7th in 4:03.
Steven Hooker continued his good State League form
winning the pole vault with a leap of 4.60 off a short run.
Kynan Dawes had his first ever win in State League
competition in the 3000 m steeplechase, outsprinting me in the last lap to run
9:36.1 while I finished second in 9:38.4.
The 400 m runners Justin Clarke, Marty Duke and
Trent Hartshorne finished first, second and third in the 400 m to collect
maximum points and almost enable us to catch Glenhuntly, however they had too
big a lead. It was great to see Justin back on the track running 47.11 in less
than ideal conditions.
We will need to show improved from on Thursday
night to hold our second place on the ladder.
