STATE LEAGUE ROUND 9
14 FEBRUARY 2002

The Box Hill Men's State League team tonight put up a strong showing on the track in Round 9 of State League Competition, but once again had many holes in the field events with Cameron Baker with 3.80 in the pole vault for equal second scoring points in any field event for the night. Despite this, due to the dominance of our track athletes, we should finish no worst than third (final results were once again not available).

Ned McLeod continued his good form over 400 m hurdles to finish second in 55.79, while Cameron Baker ran a PB to win the second heat in 58.19 and start the night well.

Nick Brudenell failed to clear a height in the pole vault after just recovering from a knee injury.

The 200 m runners won all three heats with Tim Williams running 21.36, Braden Fraser 21.68 and Marty Duke 21.66.

Braden once again attempted the long jump but his best legal jump was 6.12 which just failed to match the qualifying distance of 6.20 m.

Stephen Miles managed his first State League qualifying performance for the year with a time of 17.1 s for fifth.

Michael Jones gave the leaders about 10 m start with 200 to go and ran them down in the straight to once again win the 800 in a time of 1:51.8, while Tim Heron ran a PB to win the second heat in 1:51.7, with Trent Hartshorne not far behind running 1:54.4 for 7th.

The 5000 runners all ran well in the hot conditions with Marcus Tierney running 14:51.3 for 5th, John Meagher breaking 15 minutes for the first time for the season with 14:58.3 for 7th and Dale Bickham running a solid race for 9th place in 15:25.7.

The 4x400 relay team of Peter Knott, Tim Williams, James Fildes and Marty Duke swapped the lead with Melbourne Uni several times during the race with Marty making up 10 metres on the last leg to pass the Uni runner with 50 metres to go and hold on for a great win (with a split of about 47.7) to finish off a night of fine performances on the track.

The Box Hill Women's State League team also performed well on the track to help secure their place in the finals.

Round 10 of State League competition continues next Thursday night at Olympic Park and it is important that the teams continue to perform well to ensure that we make the finals.
