Please, if you are the last person to leave the track, turn off the lights and close the club rooms and the gate to the track. If only one or two people are around when you are leaving, please let them know that you are leaving and remind them to lock up when they leave.

Shield Final 2014-15

February 7, 2015

RESULTS FROM SHIELD SEASON FINAL

Men Open Division 1

Glenhuntly                  1,335

Box Hill                      1,227

Nunawading               1,176

Melbourne Uni               988

Essendon                        968

Doncaster                       871

Knox                              679

Richmond                      418

Unfortunately we were not able to defend the premiership that we won last year.

Although our team was leading for much of the day a failure to field the full 3 competitors in the steeplechase and the walk on top of the injury to Daniel White-Alikakos that left him hobbling across the line in the 100m and unable to compete in the 400m, meant that we fell short at the end of the day. Special mention to Blake Lucas and James Baumgartner who each did five events on the day and to David Thomson who competed in the javelin, discus and pole vault despite a back injury.

Men 40+

Diamond Valley          961

Box Hill                      872

Waverley                     860

Collingwood               722

Geelong                       623

Bendigo                      576

Essendon                     516

Vic Masters                 448

Keilor St Bernards      437

Oakleigh                      384

Ballarat                        182

Box Hill finally managed to defeat Waverley this year, only to be outdone by Diamond Valley. Nevertheless it was a great team effort and if not for Kynan Dawes pulling a calf muscle and collapsing to the ground when looking a good chance to win the 1500m (which also put him out of action for the 400m) the scores would have been a lot closer. Thanks to Andrew Wilcox for his work organising this team throughout the season.

Men U18

Diamond Valley          791

Keilor St Bernards      661

Collingwood               645

Essendon                     630

Casey Cardinia            617

Sandringham               482

Box Hill                      452

Bendigo                      444

Old Xaverians             406

Ballarat                        133

With our top multi event athlete overseas and injuries to a couple of others we were always going to struggle to field a competitive team in this division. Still there were some great performances, especially by Matt Harcourt who competed in the 100m, 400m, 4x100m relay, 110m hurdles, discus, javelin and long jump!

Diamond Valley          363

Keilor St Bernards      213

Unfortunately we were only able to field one walker, one steeplechaser and no one in the hurdles. Despite this our team challenged for the lead several times throughout the day. Next year we must make sure that we qualify athletes in all events and premiership could be ours!

Congratulations to Talitha Crawford, Karen Carah, Amanda Harper, Pia Hunter, Simone Lovass, Deb Dyer, Kerry Putt and Sharron Meager who all put in great performances to win the Athletics Victoria shield premiership. It was a great team effort throughout the whole season, with everyone covering multiple events and then putting in some wonderful performances in the final to take out the team title.

Special mention to Karen Carah, who competed in six events and Taltitha Crawford who did five. Also Amanda Harper, who not only ran a PB in the steeplechase, but spent several weeks learning to pole vault so that she could score points for the club in the final in this event.

This team had four injury withdrawals (three in the last few days before the final) which left the team somewhat depleted, but they still performed very well to finish second, with Zoe Schwerkolt again putting in a great team performance competing in the 2000m Walk, 3000m steeplechase, 1500m and 400m.

Box Hill had won the previous two U16 titles, but this year the team was split, with many of the girls moving up to U18. Our team still had a real chance to win again this year, until we realised that the Shield finals clashed with the state Little Athletics multi-event championship and three of our girls would be unavailable. The team still performed well, with a number of outstanding performances.
